The Second Medical Faculty is one of the basic faculties of Kharkiv National Medical University, which successfully trains high level educated students in health сare system. During existence of the Faculty, about thirty thousand doctors were trained.
One of modern directions of innovation is informatization technology. The most important part in this process is the usage of information and communication technologies in the teaching process. For now on the information technology is an integrative part of the educational process at our faculty. On the modern principles of education new requirements are acceptable, therefore within the state-level digitalization, the implementation of the project “Digital Dean’s Office” on the base of II Medical Faculty was approved by Academic Council of University. At all departments of the II Medical Faculty ambitious students perform medical scientific researches and the most talented graduates continue their education at the postgraduate education courses.
Graduates of the faculty get an international diploma for the specialty “Medicine” with the international recognized education-qualification level “Master”. The faculty includes 8 departments: Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology № 1, Department of Internal Medicine № 2, Clinical Immunology and Allergology named after academician L.T. Malaya, Department of Dermatology, Venerology and AIDS, Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Internal Medicine, Department of Neurology, Department of Urology, Nephrology and Andrology named after honored Professor A.G. Podrez, Department of Phthisiatry and Pulmonology, Department of Surgery № 2.

The history of the Medical faculty has been origin since 1804, when it was founded as a basis for the development of medical sciences at the Imperial Kharkiv University. From 1920 to 1992, the Department of the Medical sciences was reorganized into the Medical, Treatment and prophylactic and Treatment faculties. As an independent part of Medical University, the II Medical Faculty was established in 1994.
At the faculty, there are more than 900 students. Among them, about 5 percent are excellent students; almost half have a grade of “good” and “excellent”. One in five students participates in research as part of a student research group. Their results were presented at the final scientific conferences of the University, as well as in other institutions of higher education in Ukraine and abroad.

Applicants for higher education study actual issues of disease prevention and development, master modern methods of diagnosis and treatment, including emergencies, the principles of resuscitation and intensive care. Great attention is paid to the study of modern problems of therapeutic, gynecological, surgical, pediatric and hygienic profiles.
Graduates of the faculty who have successfully studied special military disciplines are awarded officer ranks by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
Public organizations successfully work at the faculty:
– Student government;
– Union of Student Youth;
– Trade union organization of youth;
– Student council of the dormitory.
Scientific research work of the departments of the faculty is carried out within the research of the university: “Study of the regularities of pathological processes and development of methods for their correction.”
According to the materials of scientific researches, the employees of the departments of the faculty annually publish educational publications, methodical recommendations and guidelines.
Scientists of the faculty constantly take part in scientific forums, symposiums, congresses, conferences, etc.
The results of scientific researches testify to the high scientific potential of the departments of the faculty wide implementation of scientific developments in health care practice and active publishing.
There are student research groups at all departments of the faculty, where future doctors acquire knowledge and skills in scientific activities. Our students participate in International and Republican student scientific conferences. More than 150 students are conducting researches.
We pay special attention to the principles of academic integrity, educate students on such values as honesty, trust, justice, respect, responsibility and courage. All stakeholders are guided by these principles – during training, teaching, research and further professional activities in order to ensure confidence in learning outcomes and / or scientific achievements.
All departments of the second medical faculty carry out therapeutic and preventive work. They are located on the basis of medical and preventive institutions of Kharkiv and operate in accordance with standard agreements with clinical bases, in accordance with the order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
Clinical bases of departments are profile specialized centers – departments of regional and city hospitals. The activities of clinical departments are aimed at improving the quality of health care of the population of the city and region, to fulfill the tasks defined by the concept of health care development of Ukraine in accordance with the Decrees of the President of Ukraine and the Cabinet of Ministers.
The organization of medical work of clinical departments is aimed at improving the health of the population, the implementation of new effective methods of prevention, diagnostics and treatment.
The material and technical base of medical institutions is being strengthened at the expense of the medical university, municipal finances, extra-budgetary funds and humanitarian aid every year, which allows to purchase valuable medical-diagnostic and laboratory equipment. This helps to increase the quality of medical and diagnostic work at clinical departments and improving training.
The efforts of the staff of clinical departments to increasing the quality of medical care for the population of the city and region are aimed at training medical personnel and improving their professional skills, development and implementation of new medical technologies in practice. Increasingly, attention is paid to improving the quality of medical, diagnostic, consulting, operational, organizational and methodological activities in basic and other treatment and prevention institutions in the city and region districts, participation in activities to promote healthy lifestyles, disease prevention and environmental improvement.
Periodic demonstration of doctors rounds and operations, clinical, clinic-pathological, abstract and scientific-practical conferences, lectures for doctors and the population, implementation of new methods of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases contribute to the improvement of the quality of medical care.
Employees of clinical departments conduct extensive consulting work, surgical interventions, modern instrumental and laboratory researches. They perform special examinations and medical manipulations, such as bronchoscopy, thrombolysis, laparocentesis, endoscopy, laparoscopy, bronchography, dialysis, plasmapheresis, echoencephalography, rapid diagnosis of heart rate variability, fibrogastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy, rectoromanoscopy, ultrasound examination of various organs and systems, X-ray examination of patients, computed tomography, nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, sternal, pleural, abdominal punctures, operations on the thyroid and mammary glands, abdominal organs, respiratory organs, etc.
It should be noted that the treatment and prevention works of all departments of the faculty are carried out in close contact with the management and staffs of basic medical associations.
Employees of the departments provide supervision and practical assistance to the patronized districts of the region, departures of air ambulance.
Clinical departments together with the health authorities of the city and region regularly organize scientific and practical conferences, seminars for general practitioners, participate in the organization and holding of regional specialist days, clinical and anatomical conferences, operational analysis of infant and maternal mortality, incidence of tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases, mortality from urgent surgical pathology, cardiovascular, oncological pathology, etc., participate in sanitary and educational work.
All activities are taken to reduce mortality, disability, improve the results of medical work, diseases prevention among the population of Kharkiv region thanks to working together of clinical departments with health authorities, the use of scientific potential of medical staffs of departments.
Students of the II Medical Faculty are actively involved in the implementation of international activities of the university.
Many different academic mobility programs have been implemented at KhNMU. Applicants for education of the II Medical Faculty have the opportunity to undergo practical training, carry out semester training, choose thematic internships in certain disciplines in both foreign and domestic partner institutions. KhNMU students have already visited such countries as Germany, USA, Bulgaria, Poland, Lithuania, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Japan, Canada, Iran, Kazakhstan and others. Academic mobility programs allow our students not only to deepen their professional knowledge and skills, get acquainted with the peculiarities of medical care in different countries, but also help to immerse themselves in the culture and traditions of peoples, meet colleagues, find like-minded people in various fields of medicine. As a result, it will promote the development of competitiveness, acquisition of competencies and skills in the context of best international educational practice. On the other hand, due to the fact that mobility programs provide a two-way format, our students have the opportunity to join the organization of the reception of foreign delegations in Kharkiv. Applicants for education enthusiastically acquaint guests not only with the university and the system of classes, but also organize leisure, open up great opportunities of our beautiful city. It creates an atmosphere of unity and mutual understanding.
