Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Internal Medicine

About us

The course of clinical pharmacology of the medical faculty was introduced in 1986 by the academician of the NAMS of Ukraine Lyubov Trokhimivna Malaya. Since then, the discipline has been taught at the medical and pediatric faculties.

An important area of work of the department was the study of evaluating the effectiveness and safety of new drugs in therapeutic practice, an individualized approach to the choice of drug therapy. The results of scientific research have been widely published in leading medical journals and abroad. These include daily blood pressure monitoring to evaluate the effectiveness of antihypertensive drugs, study of the effectiveness of drugs that affect vascular platelet hemostasis, assessment of central gemodynamics and intracardiac kinetics, vascular endothelial function and the thickness of the intima-mediated complex. The department became a reference department in the discipline “Clinical Pharmacology” in Ukraine.

Since then, the discipline has been taught at the medical and pediatric faculties. Further development of teaching clinical pharmacology to students was by increasing the volume of new topics on private issues of clinical pharmacology, the introduction of workshops to assess the effectiveness of drugs, the rational appointment of drug therapy, the publication of the first textbooks, teaching aids and teaching materials.
An important area of work of the department was the study of evaluating the effectiveness and safety of new drugs in therapeutic practice, an individualized approach to the choice of drug therapy. The results of scientific research have been widely published in leading medical journals and abroad. These include daily blood pressure monitoring to evaluate the effectiveness of antihypertensive drugs, study of the effectiveness of drugs that affect vascular platelet hemostasis, assessment of central gemodynamics and intracardiac kinetics, vascular endothelial function and thickness of the intima-mediated complex. The staff of the department participated in international multicenter clinical trials to assess the effectiveness and safety of new drugs in patients with therapeutic profile. The department became a reference department in the discipline “Clinical Pharmacology” in Ukraine.
From 2004 to 2013 the Department of Internal Medicine № 1 and Clinical Pharmacology was headed by Professor Oleg Yakovlevich Babak.
In 2013, after reorganization, the Department of Clinical Pharmacology became an independent structural unit of Kharkiv National Medical University and was headed by Academician of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Medicine, Professor, Head of the Northeastern Research Center of the Ministry of Health and the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine, Honored Doctor of Ukraine Oleksandr Bilovol. Since 2016, the department was headed by Professor Lesya Bobrovnikova. Currently, the department is headed by Irina Knyazkova.

The department teaches the course “Clinical Pharmacology” for students of the 5th year of medical faculties, 6th year of the Faculty of Dentistry, faculties for training foreign students, “Internal Medicine” for students of the 6th year of the First Medical Faculty, “Clinical Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics “(for first-year students majoring in” Nursing “), elective courses:” Actual questions of cardiology “(for students of the 6th year of the faculty for the training of foreign students), “Phytotherapy” (for students of the 4th year of medical faculty and 3rd year of the dental faculty for training foreign students), “Actual questions of gastroenterology” (for students of the 5th year of the faculty for training foreign students), aspects of clinical pharmacology” (for students of the 5th year of the faculty for the training of foreign students), “Actual questions of comorbid conditions” (for students of the 5th year of the Faculty of Foreign Applicants), “Side effects of drugs” (for students of the 3rd year of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Foreign Applicants), as well as medical practice (for applicants of the 5th year of the I medical faculty). Modern technologies are widely used in the educational process. A multimedia course of lectures on clinical pharmacology has been developed. The latest teaching methods in distance learning are being successfully introduced.

The main directions of scientific work are the study of the role of cellular, immunoinflammatory, neurohumoral mechanisms of development and endothelial status in hypertension, atherosclerosis, chronic coronar syndrome, acute myocardial infarction, chronic heart failure and their complications and associated conditions, as well as the development of pathogenetic treatment. Priority areas include the development of methods for early diagnosis and medicamental prevention of fibrosing processes in patients with combined pathology (hypertension and type 2 diabetes) based on the assessment of cardiohemodynamics and renal function. In addition, studies of changes in central gemodynamics and intracardiac kinetics and the development of pathogenetically treatment regimens in patients with cardiovascular disease who have undergone COVID-19.

Main scientific achievements for the last 5 years:
– received 16 patents (copyright certificates) of Ukraine, 2 of them for inventions;- 6 monographs were published, among them: “Arterial hypertension in young people” (2018), “Current issues of cardiology” (2019), “Arterial hypertension and comorbidity” (2020);
– 17 information letters, 8 branch innovations were issued;
– 22 articles were published in journals indexed by databases Web of Science and/or Scopus and more than 40 articles in journals included in the list of scientific professional publications of Ukraine.
