Internship cycle in the specialty “Otolaryngology” (2 years of study)
The training of interns at the department of otorhinolaryngology of KhNMU is conducted in accordance with the “Standard curriculum and program of specialization (internship) of graduates of higher medical institutions of education of III-IV levels of accreditation” in the specialty “Otolaryngology”, in accordance with the order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine dated June 22 No. 1254 of 2021 “On approval of the Internship Regulation, registered with the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine on August 17, 2021 under No. 1081/36703
Duration of internship training: the term (22 months – 3432 hours) of the internship provides:
Educational part: (institutions of higher or postgraduate education): 6 months (936 hours), three months annually (15.6 ECTS credits per year).
Practical part: (internship bases) 16 months (2496 hours).

The purpose of studying the course
Increasing the level of practical training of graduates of higher medical institutions of education III – IV levels of accreditation of medical faculties of universities, deepening of theoretical knowledge, acquisition of practical skills and training of otolaryngologists for independent work in otolaryngology offices of polyclinics and otolaryngology departments of hospitals.
The mastery of professional skills is evaluated at all stages of the intern’s training: at the beginning of the internship (basic control), during the preparation of assessments for sections of the program, during the preparation of a differentiated assessment at the end of the 1st year of study and the final exam. All types of control over the intern’s training are reflected in the work diaries of the intern doctors and in the record books. Training of interns on the basis of internship is carried out under the supervision of heads of departments or doctors of the highest and first qualification category (no more than 5-6 interns per supervisor).
Planned activities
The training of an intern includes not only mastering the practical skills of treating patients with otolaryngological pathology, but also participation in medical conferences, consultations, clinical visits, and preoperative examinations. In addition, the intern doctor systematically studies and reviews the thematic literature, mastering the statistical analysis of the work of the department. It is mandatory for the intern to be on duty at the clinic (2 shifts per month for 12 hours each) under the guidance of highly qualified specialists. Working on internship bases (8 months in the first year and 8 months in the second year), the intern, under the supervision of the manager, receives patients in the polyclinic, performs various diagnostic and therapeutic manipulations, examines and operates on patients in the hospital. At the same time, the intern continues to study and review special literature, systematizes it in the form of thematic reports on topics proposed by the department (2 reports per month).
After completing the course, the intern will receive:
– The necessary volume of knowledge on the topographical and clinical anatomy of the upper respiratory tract and ear, the physiology of the ENT organs, the interrelationship of the functional systems of the body and the level of their regulation;
– Masteres and assimilates relevant clinical and functional research methods in otolaryngology, the causes of pathological processes of the upper respiratory tract and ear; the mechanism of their development and clinical manifestations;
– Sufficient amount of knowledge on clinical symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of the main diseases of the nose and paranasal sinuses, external, middle and inner ear, pharynx, larynx, trachea and esophagus, their prevention, providing emergency care in case of urgent ENT pathology;
– Intern doctors who complete their internship are subject to attestation to determine the level of knowledge and mastery of practical skills for awarding the title of doctor-specialist in the specialty “Otolaryngology” in accordance with the procedure established by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
In the ENT clinic, the following programs have been implemented: a concurrent cycle of postgraduate education for family physicians specializing in Otorhinolaryngology, thematic cycles in the field of Otorhinolaryngology designed for Otorhinolaryngologists, pediatric Otorhinolaryngologists, family physicians, and internists:
- “Current issues of otorhinolaryngology”;
- “Emergencies in otorhinolaryngology (Otorhinolaryngology)”;
- “Non-drug treatment methods in otorhinolaryngology.”
