The research interests of the department are largely related to the study of fundamental problems in chemistry – determining the modern trends of synthesis of biologically active heterocyclic compounds, molecular modeling of molecules of organic compounds and determining their biological activity using modern methods. Research of the department is devoted to special chemical-pharmaceutical substantiation of pharmacological properties of compositions containing nitrogen-containing organic compounds and adjuvants (caffeine, lycopid), quantum-chemical and experimental substantiation of creation of new domestic anti-inflammatory and analgesic pharmaceutical compositions based on nitrogen-containing organic compounds of different chemical structure.
Topics of scientific research, research works of the department
Professor G.O.Syrova is the head of the initiative research works of the Department of Medical and Bioorganic Chemistry of KhNMU. Associate Professor L.V. Lukianova is the responsible executor. The department staff worked at the following scientific areas:
– From 2010 to 2012, the scientific direction of the department was to study new compositions containing caffeine and non-narcotic analgesics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, diclofenac sodium, analben (potassium salt of 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid)). Topic of research work is “Chemical-pharmaceutical substantiation of pharmacological properties of compositions containing caffeine”. – From 2013 to 2015, the department performed research work “Chemical-pharmaceutical and experimental substantiation of pharmacological properties of compositions containing nitrogen-containing organic compounds” (paracetamol, carbamazepine, caffeine).
– From 2016 to 2018, the department performed research work “Chemical-pharmaceutical and experimental substantiation of pharmacological properties of oxicams and their compositions with caffeine” (meloxicam, piroxicam, caffeine).
Since 2019, the department has been conducting research work “Chemical and pharmaceutical justification for the creation of biologically active compounds, conjugates and drug compositions with anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities” (rofecoxib, celecoxib, lycopid, bis-mefenamidocalixarene conjugate with biophore fragments of 2-(2,3-dimethylphenyl)-aminobenzoic acid, derivatives of 4-amino-5- (pyridin-4-yl) -1,2,4-triazole(4H)-3-yl-thioacetamides) – 2019- 2023 years.
Preparation of PhD, doctors of philosophy
Candidate’s dissertation dedicated to the synthesis and molecular modeling of biologically active organic compounds of different chemical structure was performed at the Department of Medical and Bioorganic Chemistry of KhNMU. Professor G.O. Syrova was a supervisor of the candidate’s dissertation of assistant N.M. Chalenko “Molecular modeling of potential non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from different chemical groups”, from 2015 till 2020 (completed on time, defense took place on 29.09.2020).
Professor G.O. Syrova regularly acts as an official opponent in the defense of doctoral and candidate dissertations, gives review for doctoral and candidate dissertations. Professor G.O. Syrova is a fellow of Academic council of KhNMU and ERITIC of KhNMU, existing member of International Academy of Ecology (IAE), academician of IAE from 14th of July, 2016. Moreover Ganna Olegivna is an academician of the division of chemistry, chemical technology and pharmacy SO «National Academy of Higher Education Sciences of Ukraine» from 25th of June, 2019, honored Doctor of Science of the University “Lviv Stavropigion” (19.03.2018), she is deputy chairman of the Approbation Council for Theoretical Disciplines (2021).

The results of prof. G.O. Syrova’s scientific work were introduced into the practice of health care in the form of methodical instruction “Methodological justification for the use of quantum pharmacological indicators to determine the pharmacokinetics of drugs” and “Preclinical study of the specific activity of potential drugs of primary and secondary neuroprotection.” The results of the department staff were brought into use in the practice of health care in the form of 1 certificate of authorship, 7 medical technologies proposed for inclusion in the List of medical technologies, information letters, patents for inventions and utility models, acts of implementation of research results, more than 20 meaningful monographs dedicated to studies of quantum chemistry, chemical, pharmacological, medical and other aspects of oxygen, ozone, water, amber, clay, copper, dispersed systems, amino acids, quantum pharmacology, dermatopharmacology, history of the chemical school of Kharkiv and KhNMU.
In recent years, 41 patents of Ukraine (4 of them – for inventions), 4 information letters, 7 medical technologies for inclusion in the list of medical technologies, 25 monographs were published, 320 articles were published in Ukrainian journals as well as foreign scientific periodicals (189 articles), including journals of the list of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine – 81, journals indexed in Scopus – 26, Web of science – 13, Scopus and Web of science – 3 and 290 abstracts, including 66 on foreign scientific events.
At the present moment the Medical and Bioorganic Chemistry Department has placed 1012 works, including lectures for students – 166, educational and methodical publications – 137, scientific works – 610, scientific works of young scientists – 110 in the repository of KhNMU.
Membership in professional associations
Employees of the Department of Medical and Bioorganic Chemistry are members of the All-Ukrainian Public Organization “Association of Pharmacologists of Ukraine”, which was founded in 2002.
The Association is a co-owner and co-publisher of the periodical scientific journal “Pharmacology and Medicinal Toxicology”, which publishes original research results in the field of medical and biological sciences. The experience and knowledge of pharmacologists of Ukraine are open and widely used by pharmaceutical companies for creating new drugs. Members of the Association cover issues of quality, safety and effectiveness of medicines in the media.
The All-Ukrainian Public Organization “Association of Pharmacologists of Ukraine” gained full membership status in UPHAR in 2009. In the light of this event, the Association has prospects for cooperation with the world pharmacological community and the possibility of implementing long-term plans.
