Student Self-Government Projects in Action
September, 22 was quite a busy day of events for KhNMU students, so two useful events took place on the Google Meet platform with the support of the education quality assessment sector of the KhNMU Student Self-Government.
At 17:00 as part of the project “Ukrainians Abroad” (the project was created to dispel myths about studying and working abroad, to compare the medical field of Ukraine with other countries, where the speakers are Ukrainian students and interns , who are currently abroad) there was an online meeting with Yaryna Ihorivna Lininskaya, who studied at LNMU named after Danyla Halytskyi and completed an internship in Ukraine, and the “General Practice” specialization in England.
During the meeting, she told why she chose Britain to start her medical career, as well as the specifics of confirming a Ukrainian diploma for obtaining a work license.
Yaryna shared life hacks on how to better plan your preparation for taking all relevant tests (IELTS ACADEMIC + OET, PLAB 1 and PLAB 2). She told us what rules the English have and what we should adopt in medicine and life. After the presentation, the speaker answered the participants’ questions and shared that she dreams of returning to Ukraine when she has enough experience to reform medicine.
“Time to choose”
At 18:00 as part of the project “Time to choose” (the project was created to help medical students decide on their future specialization, where the speakers are practicing doctors who are ready to share the specifics of their work and answer any question) an online meeting was held with anesthesiologist Serhiychyk Mykyta Serhiyovych, who works in the Leleka maternity hospital in Kyiv.
Mykyta Serhiyovych talked about the features and specifics of the anesthesiologist’s work in the maternity hospital and answered the questions of our students.
At the beginning of the meeting, the general understanding of this specialization was clearly and meaningfully discussed, as well as what an anesthesiologist does during surgery. Since 1st-year students were also present at the lecture, the participants analyzed the topic “Types of childbirth anesthesia” and what drugs are used for each of them. They also analyzed the “Golden standard of childbirth analgesia”, namely the epidural, which is most often used by doctors, and discussed the mechanisms of its implementation.
The students received advice from the doctor, such as: not to be afraid to take responsibility, try to work as a nurse or paramedic, and to choose the specialization of your dreams more quickly.
At the end, the students asked a number of questions, namely: what problems did the speaker face when choosing a given profile, which course is better to go to work from, and how to overcome burnout. In total, 41 students took part in the event.
The Student Self-Government of KhNMU thanks all participants for their activity and hopes that these events held for students are really useful and interesting.
