Department of partial epidemiology with the clinic of infectious diseases was created in 1923 in the Kharkiv medical institute the on the base of infectious department of the Kharkiv military hospital № 4 (Geroiv Nebesnoi Sotni sq., 14). First head of the department was doctor of medicine, Full Professor Zinayida Nesmelova – first female Professor and doctor of medicine in Ukraine. In 1926 a department was shifted in 3rd infectious department of 2nd of the Soviet hospital on Geroiyv Hkarkova av. Scientific researches were conducted in direction of study of clinic of the louse-borne typhus, infectious erythemas, clinic and epidemiology of malaria, influenza, epidemic parotitis, typhoid and others infectious diseases.
In 1932 the department of infectious diseases of the Kharkiv medical institute was headed by Full Professor Illya Braude. He created scientific school, which spared the special attention to the study of intestinal infections both etiological and in clinical therapeutic aspects. Considerable part of scientific researches was on infectious typhuses.
In a period from 1958 1963 to the duties of head of department were carried out by an Associate Professor Hryhorij Fridman. In 1964 Full Professor Mykhajlo Liskovtsev, participant of II World War, become a Head of the department.
Professor Tamara Chorna become Head of the Department in 1969. Beginning of her work coincides with a considerable event for a department – move in a new location – 22nd infectious hospital on the street of Byron, 160 (now Heroev Stalingradu av.), in which a collective got the special apartment with cabinets for teachers, by educational rooms, laboratory, wonderful lecture hall and modern clinical base. Within the framework of scientific researches on a department the problems of diagnostics of dysentery, influenza, erysipelas, diphtheria and other infections were studied. Distribution of interest to immunology promoted because here immunological researches began to be inculcated. With development of technical progress and laser technique on a department first in Ukraine developed new direction of treatment of infectious diseases – method of therapy by a laser exposure. From 1992 to 2019 to a department was headed by Full Professor Volodymyr Kozko. His arrival was marked by the search for new ways and opportunities for the development of scientific research. Attention is paid to the study of the state of compensatory mechanisms of adaptation to the infectious process and the improvement of medicinal and non-medicinal means of treatment. Over the years of research work, V.M. Kozko received 19 patents for inventions, published more than 320 scientific and scientific-methodical works, including 1 monograph and 7 training manuals, including those with the seal of the Ministry of Health. From September 2019 Head of the Department is Full Professor Kateryna Yurko.
The Department of Tuberculosis as part of the Kharkiv Medical Institute was created in March 1923 on the basis of the Kharkiv Tuberculosis Clinical Institute. Before the organization of the independent department, there was a tuberculosis course at the department of faculty therapy.
The first head of the department and at the same time the director of the recently established tuberculosis institute was Professor I.I. Feinschmidt (1923-1931). From 1931 to 1956, the department was headed by Professor B.M. Khmelnytskyi.
Since 2010, the head of the department has been Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor O.S. Shevchenko. The department was located on the 1st floor on Novo-Bavarskiy Ave., 2, on the basis of the Communal Non-Commercial Enterprise of the Kharkiv Regional Council “Regional Tuberculosis Dispensary No. 1” and on the basis of the “Regional Tuberculosis Hospital No. 3” Pirogova, 8. On September 1, 2023, it was merged with the Department of Infectious Diseases.
