Today the educational process at Kharkiv National Medical University is provided by 88 departments with more than 1153 scientific and pedagogical workers, including 230 doctors of sciences, 698 PhDs, 3 academician of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, 3 corresponding members of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, 15 Honorary Workers of Science and Technology of Ukraine, 3 Honorary Workers of Education of Ukraine, 2 Honorary Doctors of Ukraine, 1 Honorary Worker of Pharmacy of Ukraine, 2 Honorary Worker of Health of Ukraine, 9 laureates of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology, 28 academicians of public academies of Ukraine. The University has 8 faculties, 3 education and research institutes: Educational and Research Institute for Quality of Education of the University, Education and Research Institute for Training of International Citizens, Education and Research Institute for Postgraduate Education. During the years, 18 scientific and pedagogical schools have been formed at KhNMU and are being further developed.
University’s scientists are working on important issues in modern medical science and healthcare practice. Thus, research is renowned as a world novelty, as evidenced by the patents of the United States, China, Germany and other countries of the world. Scientists actively cooperate with a lot of international research institutions and organizations, including the Federation of European Physiological Societies, the European Association of Urology, the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, the International Brain Research Organization, the Regional European Office of WHO, the European Research Fund and many others.
The University is a modern multidisciplinary educational institution with a strong scientific base, which includes 6 educational research and Research Institute of Occupational Health and Occupational Diseases, Ukrainian Institute of Mitochondrial and Epigenomic Medicine; Research Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine of KhNMU, University Dental Centre; Educational and Scientific Medical Center «University Clinic» of KhNMU; Medical College. The University has a Central Research Laboratory, 4 problem research laboratories, the Training and Research Centre with phantom learning technologies and computer classes, the Computer Centre; the Scientific Library with a fund of more than one million copies; 15 computer classes; more than 550 modern computers, video and audio equipment are used in the educational process.
The University has 5 permanent specialized scientific councils for the defense of doctoral and PhD’s theses in 16 specialties. Under the permission of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine one-time specialized scientific councils for the defense of thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) are created occasionally.
The University has 48 clinical departments, which are located on the basis of medical and preventive establishments of the city and Kharkiv region as well as on the basis of 6 educational and scientific industrial associations within the relevant departments and Ukrainian Institute of Mitochondrial and Epigenomic Medicine, SO «Grigoriev Institute for Medical Radiology and Oncology of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine», GI «Zaycev Institute of General and Emergency surgery of the National academy of medical sciences of Ukraine», GI «L.T.Malaya Therapy National Institute of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine», Institute of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Regional Medical Clinical Center of Urology and Nephrology named after V.I. Shapoval and university hospitals.
The activity of student self-government bodies is well-developed at Kharkiv National Medical University along with the activity of amateur art groups and creative associations. The University pays great attention to physical culture and sports activities of students. In general, KhNMU has all the conditions for successful learning, research, acquisition of practical skills in the medical profession, as well as comprehensive development of youth.
Since 1951, Kharkiv National Medical University, one of the first in the country, began to study doctors for foreign countries. Over 55 years, the University has trained more than 3,600 medical specialists, including 3 doctors of science, 70 PhDs, and more than 250 clinical residents for 86 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.
Over the years of its functioning, Kharkiv National Medical University has trained more than 60,000 doctors. The University is proud of the fact that its graduates, including international ones, have held high positions in healthcare system of Ukraine and other countries in certain years. Six graduates of the University were Ministers of Health of Ukraine, another six alumni at different times headed and still head healthcare institutions of our state. Among international graduates, there are the UNRWA member, Mr. Maraca Nedal Fahri (Jordan), the current Speaker of the Parliament of Equatorial Guinea, Mr. Solomon Ngema Ovone Abeme, and many others, who are grateful for their years spent at the University.
