About us
The department of traumatology and orthopedics of Kharkiv National Medical University was founded in 1921. The main activities of the department are: educational and scientific work, methodical, medical-diagnostic and consultative work.
The educational activity of the department consists in teaching 5th year students of medical faculties of Kharkiv National Medical University on the subject “Traumatology and Orthopedics” and “Traumatology and Orthopedics with features in children”, the 3rd year bachelors of the IV Medical Faculty on the specialty “Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy” on the subject “Sports Traumatology” and “Traumatology and Orthopedics”; the 1st year masters of the IV medical faculty in the subject “Traumatology and Orthopedics”, as well as in the training of PhD students.
The scientific direction of the department includes diagnosis of osteoporosis in infectious inflammatory diseases of the musculoskeletal system, osteoarticular tuberculosis, development of new osteosynthesis methods of injuries of long bones of the extremities, treatment of injuries and diseases of the pelvis, joints, spine, hip and knee replacement.
Scientific and educational activities are closely related to the methodical work – the preparation and publication of national textbooks, guidelines for traumatology and orthopedics.
The clinical base is Public non-profit enterprise ” Kharkiv Municipal Clinical Emergency Care Hospital named after A.I. Meshchaninov” of Kharkiv City Council. Conferences, practical classes, workshops are held together with the teams of traumatology departments №1 and №2.
The Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics of KhNMU is the oldest among the profile departments of higher educational institutions not only in Ukraine, but also in the whole post-Soviet space. It was organized in January 1921 on the initiative of a recognized domestic specialist orthopedist-traumatologist and a talented teacher, professor Samuil Leontievich Tregubov.
Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics performs teaching of disciplines «Traumatology and Orthopedics» to students:
– 5 course students of specialty «Medicine», from discipline «Traumatology and Orthopedics» of І, ІІ, ІІІ, ІV medical faculties та V faculty from training foreign students of ESI TFS;
– 5 course students (English medium) of specialty «Medicine» from discipline
«Traumatology and Orthopedics» of VI, VIІ faculties from training foreign students of ESI TFS;
– 5 course students of specialty «Pediatrics» from discipline «Traumatology and Orthopedics with features in children» of ІII medical faculty;
– 3 course students of educational-qualification level «Bachelor» of specialty
«Physical therapy, occupational therapy» from discipline «Sport traumatology» of ІV
medical faculty;
– 3 course students of educational-qualification level «Bachelor» of specialty
«Physical therapy, occupational therapy» from discipline «Traumatology and Orthopedics» of ІV medical faculty;
– 1 course students of educational-qualification level «Master» of specialty
«Physical therapy, occupational therapy» from discipline «Traumatology and Orthopedics» of ІV medical faculty.
In the training of students at the department modern teaching methods using models is widely used. Multimedia support for practical classes and lectures is constantly updated. All lectures are conducted using multimedia equipment.
In 2021, 3D technologies of clinical situations were introduced into the educational process at the department, which allows students to master practical skills online.
Practical training of students takes place on the clinical basis of Public non-profit enterprise «Kharkiv Municipal Clinical Emergency Care Hospital named after A.I. Meshchaninov” of Kharkiv City Council and on traumatology departments №1 and №2.
Over the past few years, the department has published 3 national textbooks in 3 different languages, the writing of which involved leading specialists of single-profile departments of traumatology and orthopedics of Ukrainian universities. The national textbook in Ukrainian was republished in 2020. The department has also created 5 textbooks, a number of guidelines; the staff of the department participated in the preparation for the publication of a national textbook on traumatology and orthopedics for interns.
In 2022, methodological instructions for conducting practical classes with 5 course students “Traumatology and orthopedics with features in children” were issued.
The department is a reference one for the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in teaching traumatology and orthopedics. Employees of the department developed standard curricula and syllabi of the 5th year in specialty “Medicine”, from discipline “Traumatology and Orthopedics” for I, II, III, IV medical faculties and V faculty for training foreign students of ESI TFS; 5 course students (English medium) in the specialty “Medicine” from discipline “Traumatology and Orthopedics” of VI, VII – faculties for training foreign students of ESI TFS; 3 course students of educational – qualification level “Bachelor” in specialty “Physical Therapy, occupational therapy” from discipline “Sport Traumatology” of IV medical faculty; 3 course students of educational–qualification level “Bachelor” in specialty “Physical Therapy, occupational therapy” from discipline “Traumatology and Orthopedics” of IV medical faculty, 1 course students of educational-qualification level “Master” in specialty “Physical Therapy, occupational therapy” from discipline “Traumatology and Orthopedics” of IV medical faculty. Employees of the department are constantly working on reviewing scientific and methodical works, manuals created at other specialized departments of Ukrainian universities.
Currently, the department is training PhD part-time student Taras Yaroslavovych Khanyk. The department plans and implements research on improving the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis in infectious inflammatory diseases of the musculoskeletal system, as well as scientific activities of the department: diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and methods of stimulating osteogenesis in elderly people; diagnosis and modern methods of surgical treatment of osteoarticular tuberculosis; diagnosis and treatment of the bones and ligaments injuries and diseases of the pelvis, blocking osteosynthesis in fractures of long bones of various localizations; minimally invasive methods of osteosynthesis.
Thesis defense: In 2020 – Associate professor Vesnin V.V. on the topic “Optimization of treatment of tuberculous spondylitis (experimental-clinical study)”, 2021- assistant lecturer Istomin D.A. on the topic “Syndrome of lumbosacral ligament”, the thesis was submitted for official defense, the work is currently in the special council. For 2023, it is planned to defense officially the thesis of Taras Yaroslavovych Khanyk, a part-time PhD student, on the topic “The role and place of arthroscopy in the early diagnosis of infectious inflammatory diseases of the knee joint.”

Scientific and practical conferences: Employees of the department organized and held a scientific-practical conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics (February 18, 2021).
Medical work of the department is carried out on the clinical basis of Public non-profit enterprise «Kharkiv Municipal Clinical Emergency Care Hospital named after A.I. Meshchaninov” of Kharkiv City Council. Therapeutic and diagnostic work is carried out in two departments of the basic clinic. Weekly rounds of professors and associate professors of the department, clinical conferences and pathological conferences are held. Therapeutic work is to provide round-the-clock care to victims with urgent pathology and to perform planned surgical interventions for patients with orthopedic pathology within the scientific topics of the department. The bed fund of the treatment and prevention institution, which is the base of the department, counts 100 beds (traumatology departments №1 and №2).
For practical health care, the staff of the department has made 9 reports at regional conferences, meetings of scientific and methodological societies.

Conducting form: monthly meeting online (Zoom, Google Meet) or at the department offline.
At the meetings the teacher acquaints students with modern principles of diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and congenital deformities. Students give mini-presentations of those cases of musculoskeletal injuries that interested students. After the speeches, the reports are discussed.
