History of the Department of Propedeutics of Internal Medicine №2 and Nursing

The Department of Propaedeutic of Internal Medicine of the Pediatric and Sanitary Faculties of the Kharkiv Medical Institute (now the Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Medicine №2 KhNMU) was founded in 1938.

Professor Sinelnikov S.M. was the first head of the department until 1959.

5 Ph.D. dissertations were defended under his leadership. The main scientific activity was regarding new methods of research and treatment of various pathologies of internal organs. Sinelnikov S.M. is the author of one monograph and 20 scientific articles.

The department was headed by Professor Shulga Yu.D. during 1960–1981. Professor Shulga Yu.D. is the founder of the Kharkiv Nephrology School. Studies of immunological homeostasis, water-electrolyte balance, central and renal hemodynamic, pressor and depressor systems in glomerulonephritis, pyelonephritis, arterial hypertension, and new methods of treating these diseases have been widely recognized. Shulga Yu.D. trained 8 doctors and 24 candidates of medical sciences. He is the author of 5 monographs in nephrology and 130 scientific papers.

Honoured Scientist and Technician of Ukraine, Academic of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Semidotska Zh.D., had headed the Department of Propedeutics of Internal Medicine No. 2 since 1982. Professor Semidotska Zh.D. was one of the first postgraduate students of Professor Shulga Yu.D. She defended her doctorate and her PhD dissertation under Shulga’s leadership and consultancy respectively.

The activity of Professor Zh.D. Semidotska as the head of the department of propedeutics had always been aimed at combining the best national traditions with modern pedagogical innovations. Professor Semidotska Zh.D. has been heading the Kharkiv school of Nephrology for 28 years. Professor Semidotska Zh.D has trained 2 doctors and 30 candidates of medical sciences, 11 masters, published 370 scientific papers, received 17 patents for inventions and is a co-author of monographs.

Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences Tatyana S. Ospanova has been heading the department since July 2009.

Professor T.S. Ospanova is the first post-graduate student and the first doctoral student of Professor Zh.D. Semidotska. She was a postgraduate of the department in 1981, was completing doctoral dissertation on the basis of the department and successfully defended it in 1995. Professor T.S. Ospanova has been working as a professor at the department of Propedeutics of Internal Medicine No. 2 since 1997. Prof. T.S. Ospanova was the first at the department to conduct practical classes and lectures in English for foreign students. She had been the supervisor of scientific activity since 1999. Prof. T.S. Ospanova is the author of more than 200 scientific papers, a member of the Dissertation Council D 64.600.04 at KhNMU, Ukrainian and Russian Associations of Nephrology, a member of ERA-EDTA (European Renal Dialysis and Transplantation Association), the European Respiratory Society. Prof. Ospanova T.S. participates actively in arranging regional and national scientific conferences, congresses and symposia including international ones, has the appropriate certificates. Prof. Ospanova T.S. has been the chairman of the commission on ethics and bioethics of KNMU since 2007, which she represents annually at all-Ukrainian and European conferences on Bioethics. Prof. Ospanova T.S. is the guarantor of the educational program in the specialty “Nursing”.

On 24.09.2010 the department of Propaedeutics of Internal Medicine №2 was renamed in the department of Propaedeutics of Internal Medicine №2 and Nursing.
