On October 23–24, 2026, an international scientific conference titled “Human Existence in Times of War and the Post-War Period: Philosophical and Medical Discourse” took place. The event commemorated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Austrian philosopher Wolfgang Röd (1926–2014).

Professor Oksana Nakonechna, Vice-Rector for Research at Kharkiv National Medical University (KhNMU), opened the event. In her welcoming remarks, she noted that the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences at KhNMU—the conference’s primary organizer—consistently upholds an important interdisciplinary tradition: integrating the humanities and natural sciences, philosophy and medicine. This year’s event brought together scholars, educators, medical professionals, experts in the humanities, and students from various parts of Ukraine, as well as from many countries around the world.

Against the backdrop of the Russo-Ukrainian War, participants examined key challenges facing philosophy, the social sciences, and medicine through the lens of current wartime realities. Presentations by leading international and Ukrainian scholars featured prominently in the conference program, setting a high academic standard for the entire event.

The conference served as an important step toward reflecting on the human condition and identifying pathways for recovery and development in a post-war context.
