The history of the IV Medical Faculty of KhNMU dates back to 1930–1931. During this period the Faculty of Sanitation and Hygiene was established as part of the Kharkiv Medical Institute. General sanitary doctors, epidemiologists, food hygiene doctors, industrial and municipal doctors were trained. Initially, students studied for 4 years at the Faculty of Sanitation and Hygiene.
The Head of the Faculty (this was the name of the deans since 1930) was M. Zotin. On February 28, 1931, the first graduation of doctors of the Faculty of Sanitation and Hygiene took place. At this time, students of all four courses were trained. On February 11, 1932, the Faculty of Sanitation and Hygiene was separated from the Kharkiv Medical Institute and became an independent educational institution – the Kharkiv State Sanitary and Hygienic Institute (HSSHI). However, in 1934, it was closed, and the students returned to the Kharkiv Medical Institute. From 1934 to 1938, Volodymyr Krakow, Associate Professor of the Department of Food Hygiene, was the Dean of the Faculty of Sanitation and Hygiene. The primary tasks of the dean’s office were to organize education at the appropriate level. Since 1944, all hygienic departments have been restored at the faculty. From 1947 to 1961, the position of Dean of the Faculty of Sanitation and Hygiene was held by Professor Vladimir Sivoronov, Head of the Department of Food Hygiene. Associate Professor of the Epidemiology Department Victor Zhidovtsev was the Dean of the Faculty of Sanitation and Hygiene from August 25, 1961 to July 31, 1965. The Head of the Department of Food Hygiene (now the Department of General Hygiene and Ecology № 2), Professor Mikhail Krivonosov was the Dean of the Faculty for 19 years (from 1975 to 1994).
For a long time, the faculty was a training base for the Bulgarian People’s Republic, the Tajik, Moldavian and Belarusian SSRs. Scientific and pedagogical staff for the Kazakh SSR and the Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic were trained at the hygienic departments, and foreign specialists were trained as well. Beginning in 1991, a strip of transformation and reforms were launched at the faculty. In 1991–1992, the Faculty of Sanitation and Hygiene was renamed the Faculty of Preventive Medicine. The Dean of the Faculty of Preventive Medicine since March 11, 1994 was the Head of the Department of Public Hygiene, Professor Victor Zhukov. From September 2, 1996 to August 28, 1997, Professor Vitaliy Sipitiy, the Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, was the Dean of the 3rd Medical Faculty, which included two former faculties of Pediatrics and Preventive Medicine. Victor Zhukov became Deputy Dean (September 1, 1996) of the Preventive Medicine. From October 15, 1997 to October 24, 2000, the Dean of the 3rd Medical Faculty was Professor Pavlo Kravchun.
