About us

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, Pediatric Gynecology and Medical Genetics of the Kharkiv National Medical University was founded in 2023 by merging two departments of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Postgraduate Education of KhNMU – the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Pediatric Gynecology, which has been working at KhNMU since 2012, and the Department of Medical of genetics is the first independent department of genetics in Ukraine, which was founded in 2000, and since 2003 it has become the main department of medical genetics in the country.

The department of obstetrics, gynecology, children’s gynecology and medical genetics works in the system of postgraduate education on the basis of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Postgraduate Education of KhNMU. The main directions of its activity are educational and methodical, scientific, consultative and medical and diagnostic work.

The history of the department began in 1965 year. On the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the medical faculty of the Kharkov Medical Institute, which was at the head of Professor I.I.Gryschenko, started the providing of operations on the correction of developmental defects of sexual organs.

The department works in the system of postgraduate education on the basis of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Postgraduate Education of KhNMU.
Since 2012, the department has been conducting an initial three-year specialization of interns in the specialty “Obstetrics and Gynecology”. The educational process is carried out in accordance with the state program in obstetrics and gynecology (2014), which created a work program and plans for interns full-time and part-time education, which are reviewed annually and updated with changes in training. From 2017-2018 academic year the department also trains interns of general practice and family medicine in the cycle “Women’s Health”. For the first time, the teaching of pediatric gynecology was introduced for interns, obstetricians and gynecologists, pediatric gynecologists, pediatric surgeons, pediatricians, family and adolescent physicians.
From 2012-2013 academic year Postgraduate training of doctors is carried out annually in cycles of thematic improvement (TU): “Ultrasound diagnosis in gynecology and perinatology”, “Emergencies in gynecology of children and adolescents”, “Colposcopy in gynecology”, “Sexual dysfunction”, sexual dysfunction, menstruation issues of gynecology of children and adolescents”, “Gynecological endocrinology”, “Modern issues of obstetrics and gynecology”, “Use of modern reproductive technologies in medical practice”, “Infertile marriage”, “Child and adolescent gynecology in pediatric practice”, “Pregnancy and pregnancy” in minors”, “Current issues of pediatric gynecology in the practice of family physicians”, “Obstetrics and gynecology pathology in the practice of family physicians”, “Disorders of development and functions of the reproductive system”, “Ultrasound diagnostics in gynecology and pediatric gynecology”, “Miniology and pediatric gynecology”, – specialization in “Pediatrics gynecology”, improvement of doctors in the workplace on the clinical bases of the department.
Adjacent cycles are also conducted for KhNMU interns: for pediatricians and neonatologists – “Pediatric Gynecology”, for surgeons – “Emergencies in Obstetrics and Gynecology”.
The training process uses 360 guidelines for interns.
From 2016-2017 academic year 6th year students of the III Medical Faculty (“Pediatrics”) study at the department in the specialty “Obstetrics, gynecology, including pediatric gynecology”. From 2019-2020 academic year 4th and 5th year students of the III Medical Faculty (“Pediatrics”, “Medicine”) majoring in “Obstetrics and Gynecology” began studying at the department.

Practical training of students takes place on clinical bases:
– KNP “Maternity hospital № 1 Kharkiv” (110 obstetric and gynecological beds);
– KNP “Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital № 1” (with 10 specialized inpatient beds and outpatient reception in the consultative clinic of pediatric gynecology).
The department has approved postgraduate studies in “Obstetrics and Gynecology”, there is a research group.
The educational process is carried out taking into account modern interpretations, lectures and practical classes are taught using the latest technical means, including multimedia equipment, online information network, updated bank of visual aids, using simulated models, own computer class.
Since 2019, the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Pediatric Gynecology has implemented modern innovative methods of distance education – a system of interactive polls and voting Turning Point. This is a unique system of testing and automatic receipt of analytical materials for all areas of vocational education. Students, interns, graduate students, cadets are involved in the process of using these technologies. Since 2020, distance learning in the field of “Obstetrics and Gynecology” and “Pediatric Gynecology” has been integrated into the educational process.
In order to increase the level of the educational process, the department cooperates with the departments of pediatrics, pediatric surgery, foreign languages, Ukrainian language, dentistry of KhNMU, departments of obstetrics and gynecology of Bukovina Medical University, National Medical University. O.O. Bogomolets, KMAPE, KhMAPE on the following issues: perinatology, modern methods of diagnosis, treatment, prevention in obstetrics, gynecology, pediatric gynecology, fetal hypoxia and resuscitation in the delivery room based on orders of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and new European and international methodological developments and protocols.
To further improve the learning process with doctors-interns, students and cadets, the department has 9 computer programs, including 6 created by its staff, which are used in training and testing modes; bank of educational videos, including 11 own.
To improve the quality of teaching disciplines, guidelines approved by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and KhNMU on inflammatory diseases of the genital system, sexual education, acute abdomen, obstetric bleeding, abnormalities of genital development, pregnancy, intrauterine growth retardation, which are actively used in the educational process.

The scientific work of the department is aimed at studying obstetric and gynecological problems of the female body from birth to menopause, including pediatric and adolescent gynecology, perinatology, especially infertility, inflammatory diseases of the genital organs, infertility, menopausal disorders. The theme of research work of the department – “Clinical and pathogenetic features and ways to correct pathological conditions of the reproductive system of the female body at different ages”. During its existence during 2012-2021 the department has completed 6 master’s, 5 candidate’s, 1 doctoral dissertations, 4 dissertations for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in “Obstetrics and Gynecology”. 32 declarative patents of Ukraine for utility model, information letters, innovations and received acts of introduction of scientific developments in the health care system were issued. The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Pediatric Gynecology cooperates with a number of international societies and associations in obstetrics, gynecology, pediatric and adolescent gynecology, gynecological endocrinology, is an active participant in annual world, European, international, Ukrainian congresses, conferences and conferences. Employees of the department systematically publish the results of scientific achievements in foreign and domestic publications included in international scientometric databases (Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, Index Copernicus, etc.), and actively undergo internships in leading clinics around the world.
For doctors of practical health care, quarterly, according to the plans of State Health Protection of Kharkiv Regional Councilon obstetrics, gynecology, genetics and pediatric gynecology, the department holds regional and interregional conferences with international participation, schools-seminars in the framework of the Specialist Day: “Current issues of obstetrics, gynecology and pediatric gynecology.”

The clinical work of the department is carried out on clinical bases: KNP “Maternity hospital №1 Kharkiv” (110 obstetric and gynecological beds) and KNP “Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital №1” (with 10 specialized inpatient beds and outpatient reception in the consultative clinic with children gynecology).
The department conducts treatment-and-prophylactic, organizational-methodical work, provides scientific-methodical and medical assistance to branch departments, profile departments of obstetrics and gynecology, obstetricians-gynecologists, reproductive specialists, pediatricians, pediatric gynecologists and surgeons. The department manages the work of the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology in the Kharkiv region (Prof. Tuchkina I.O. is an Expert of State Health Protection of Kharkiv Regional Councilon obstetrics, gynecology, genetics and pediatric gynecology on obstetrics, gynecology, pediatric gynecology, Vice President of the Ukrainian Association of Gynecologists of Pediatric and Adolescents). Weekly visits of professors and associate professors of the department, consultations, clinical and pathological conferences, medical meetings are held at clinical bases. Employees of the department together with doctors-interns conduct sanitary-educational work in Kharkiv and districts of Kharkiv region for doctors of practical health care and population on sexual education, healthy lifestyle, prevention of gynecological diseases in children, adolescents and women. Employees of the department provide highly qualified outpatient counseling and treatment of obstetrics and gynecology for women of all ages, work with pregnant women, gynecological patients of all ages in hospitals, conducting preventive examinations of adolescent girls for early detection of gynecological early pregnancy and gynecological pathology, prevention of preservation of their reproductive potential. For doctors of practical health care, quarterly, according to the plans of State Health Protection of Kharkiv Regional Councilon obstetrics, gynecology, genetics and pediatric gynecology, the department holds regional and interregional conferences with international participation, schools-seminars in the framework of the Specialist Day: “Current issues of obstetrics, gynecology and pediatric gynecology”.

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Pediatric Gynecology cooperates with the World Society of Gynecology and Endocrinology (ISGE), the European and World Societies of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (EURAPAG, IFIGIJ), the International Society of Contraception (ISC), National Associations of Child and Adolescent Gynecology of Kazakhstan, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Italy, Serbia, Argentina, Germany, Czech Republic, Australia, Israel.
Within the framework of international cooperation, scientific and practical work on the topic “Youth Program: the formation of a healthy lifestyle” was performed.
The staff of the department regularly participates in the Republican and International Forums: the 29th European Congress of Reproductology and Embryology (UK, 2013), the 23rd International Conference “Reproductive Technologies Today and Tomorrow” (Russia, 2013), World Congresses on of Gynecological Endocrinology (Italy, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020), National Congress with International Participation in Obstetrics and Gynecology (Bulgaria, 2014), International Conferences “Current Issues in Gynecology of Children and Adolescents” and “Nature of Women” (Kazakhstan, 2014, 2016), 17th and 18th World Congresses of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (Hong Kong, 2013; Italy, 2016, 2018), 13th, 14th, 15th European Congresses on Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (Great Britain, 2014; Italy, 2016 – with the receipt of Prof. Tuchkina I.O. certificate for the best oral presentation; Lithuania, 2017, Rotterdam, 2021 – with the receipt of Prof. Tuchkina I.O. with co-authors the best poster report).
The department regularly holds regional and interregional conferences and symposiums “Topical issues of obstetrics, gynecology and pediatric gynecology” (once a quarter). Since 2014, the department has implemented a system of remote national and international video conferences: in 2015, the International Conference with online broadcast and teleconference “Ukraine – EAST-WEST” on obstetrics, gynecology and pediatric gynecology, dedicated to the 210th anniversary of KhNMU, in 2016 and in 2017 – Republican and International online conferences with teleconference Kharkiv-Zaporizhia, Kharkiv-Almaty (Kazakhstan). Employees of the department took an active part in the Scientific Symposium with international participation “Hypomenstrual syndrome in adolescent girls (pathogenesis, prevention, long-term consequences)”, which took place on 24.05.2017 in Kharkov, in the Plenum of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Ukraine with international participation Prof. Tuchkina I.O. – moderator of the section; 12 reports from the staff of the department), – Odessa, 2017; Kyiv, 2018; Kyiv, 2019. In September 2017, an International Conference was held in memory of Prof. Bogdashkina M.G. and the 5th anniversary of the department with online broadcasting and participation of foreign experts, the report of which was posted on the website of the World Society of Child and Adolescent Gynecology (FIGIJ) – 2018. In 2019, the staff of the department took part in the 1st Pan-European Trainees’ Congress in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (Germany, Frankfurt) and 9th Conference of Gynecologists and Obstetricians (Czech Republic, Prague).
Employees of the department do a lot of work with young scientists. Doctors-interns, students of the scientific circle, young scientists of the department take an active part in the annual festivals of youth science – “Medicine of the III millennium” and scientific international forums ISIC KhNMU. Since 2012, young specialists have presented about 40 oral and poster presentations, published 42 abstracts, received diplomas of I, II, III degree for participation in these scientific events. In 2016 he received the first place for the best scientific work presented at the Republican Conference of Scientists (Ternopil, 2016), received diplomas for participation in the Republican Olympiads in “Obstetrics and Gynecology”.

– Conducting related cycles for interns of pediatricians and neonatologists – “Pediatric Gynecology”, for interns of surgeons – “Emergencies in obstetrics and gynecology”;
– Preparation of PhD in “Obstetrics and Gynecology” (as of September 2021, the department has 4 graduate students).

Student scientific society

Head of the circle: Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Irina Merenkova.

A monthly meeting of the scientific group is held at the department, where topical issues of obstetrics, gynecology and pediatric gynecology are discussed.

The main directions in the work of the scientific circle of the department:

Research activities: students and young scientists actively participate in conferences and events of various levels at the university and beyond. In addition, representatives of the scientific circle of the department are annually delegates to conferences of international associations of obstetricians and gynecologists and pediatric gynecologists.

Practical activity: students and young scientists are assistants in surgical interventions, as well as participants in clinical trials at the Maternity Hospital №1 in Kharkiv and the Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital №1. In addition, students have the opportunity to attend night shifts for a more detailed acquaintance with the specialty.

The department uses the latest methods of teaching students and young scientists in the form of interactive learning, as well as trainings in the simulation center of KhNMU.
