About us

The Department of General Surgery of Kharkiv National Medical University was founded in 1805.
The main activities of the department are educational, scientific, methodical, medical diagnostic and consultative work.
The academic activity of the department consists in teaching the disciplines “Care for patients”, “General Surgery” and “Nursing Practice” for students of the 2nd and 3rd courses of the 2nd, 4th and VII medical faculties.
The scientific direction of the department includes the development and implementation of modern methods of diagnosis and treatment of surgical diseases, including liver diseases, bile ducts, pancreas, complications of liver cirrhosis, tumors and liver cysts, gallstone disease and its complications, biliary disorders, large hernias of the anterior abdominal wall, peritonitis, gastroduodenal ulcers, etc. Particular attention is paid to surgical infection and methods of dealing with it. Scientific and educational activities are closely connected with methodical work – the preparation and publication of monographs, textbooks, textbooks, methodological recommendations.
The department participates in international research on the study of the effectiveness and safety of medicines. The clinical base of the department is the non-profit municipal enterprise “City hospital No18” of Kharkiv city Council. Together with the team of the departments of surgery, anesthesiology, traumatology, bone infection, gastroenterology, therapy and neurology, conferences, clinical tests, open practical classes and lectures are held.

History of the department

The Department of General Surgery dates back to the founding of Kharkiv University in 1804.

At the opening of Kharkiv University in 1805, among 6 departments of the Department of Medical or Medical Sciences was the Department of Theoretical (or Contemplative) Surgery and Surgical Pathology. It was headed by Professor Pavel Shumlyansky (1754–1824), who from 1807 was the dean of the School of Medicine, elected honorary member of the St. Petersburg Medical and Surgical Academy.

Educational process

The department teaches three disciplines: General Surgery, NursingPractice and Patient Care for students of the 2nd, 4th and 7th Medical Faculties. Lecture materials and methodological recommendations for practical classes are constantly updated. Guidelines for students in general surgery, nursing practice and patient care (41 in total) were issued electronically.

Distance courses in Ukrainian and English were created on moodle distance learning platform in general surgery, nursing practice and patient care.

Medical work

Medical and diagnostic work is carried out in the basic departments (every year the staff of the department consults and treats about 5,000 patients with a variety of lesions of internal organs). Weekly bypasses of professors and associate professors of the department, clinical and pathoanatomical conferences are held.
On the basis of the surgical department of the 18th city hospital, the City Center for Liver Surgery, Bile Ducts and Portal Hypertension was created. Complex surgical interventions are performed in patients with various surgical pathologies of the liver, bile ducts, pancreas. The clinic operates patients with surgical pathology of the abdominal cavity, varicose disease of the lower extremities, postoperative hernias of large size in obese patients. The surgical clinic provides emergency surgical care to the residents of the city 7 days a month. On the basis of the hospital there is a round-the-clock trauma center. Inter-district department of bone infection allows you to provide qualified surgical care to patients with osteomyelitis.

A Phase 3, randomized, double-blind, multicenter study to evaluate efficacy and safety of intravenous iclaprim versus vancomycin in the treatment of acute;

bacterial skin and skin structure infections suspected or confirmed to be due to;

Gram-positive pathogens.

A randomized phase II clinical trial with an active comparator to investigate the safety, tolerability and efficacy of MK-7655 in combination with imipenem/cilastatin alone compared with imipenem/cilastatin alone in patients with complicated abdominal infection.

Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 2 study on the safety and efficacy of hpn-100 for remission in patients with liver cirrhosis and episodic hepatic hepatic encephalopathy (HALT-HE).

An open-label phase 1B study of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and safety of Ammonal injection (sodium phenyl acetate and sodium benzoate) 10%/10% administered to subjects with impaired liver and control function (NoUP1203-002).
An open-label phase 1B study of the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and safety of glyceryltrie(4-phenylbutyrate), administered both orally once and twice daily for seven consecutive days, subjects with liver failure, cirrhosis, and control groups(Up1204-002).
