About us

The department of language training of foreign citizens carries out academic, methodological, scientific and educative work.

The academic activities of the department are made up of teaching a foreign language, including a professional directed language, to the first-, second- and third-year students. At practical classes of the department the first-year students master the basics of a foreign language and also learn to live in a new country. For this purpose, the lecturers of the department have worked out a special adaptive course for the first-year students. The second- and third-year students have a language training at the department for clinical practice in city’s hospitals and a language training for taking license test exam “Krok 1”.

The department is actively involved into scientific, research and methodological work. The results of the work are constantly implemented into the educational process. The department performs an initiative topic “Social, psychological and organizational aspects of quality management of higher medical education”. Every year, since June 2006, the department has hold an annual scientific and practical conference with the international participation “Methodology and practice of linguistic training of foreign students”, on basis of which a scientific edition is published.

The educative work of the department is aimed at social adaptation of foreign students for new conditions of life and studies and creating their positive image of Ukraine, Kharkiv and KhNMU.

History of the department

The department of language training of foreign citizens was founded in 1964 for teaching foreign students from Asia, Africa and Latin America. The first head of the department was Senior Lecturer Zamureyenko V.F. For some years Senior Lecturer Nikonova T.V., Associate Professor Susoreva M.M. and Associate Professor Lakhno S.M. were the heads of the department. Since 2008 Professor, Candidate of Philological Sciences Krasnikova Svitlana Oleksandrivna has been the head of the department. Since 2017 Senior Lecturer Al-Gazo Natalia Vitaliyivna has been the acting head of the department.

Department today

The  educative work of the department is aimed at social adaptation of higher education students in the university environment and in a foreign society. These activities  consist of thematic classes and conversations held in the classroom, as well as numerous excursions, walks around the city, visits to museums, historical and cultural monuments.

 

Educational process

The department carries training of the  first-, second- and third-year students of the 5th, 6th and 7th  faculties according to the educational and professional programs “Medicine” (2nd Master’s level) and “Dentistry” (2nd Master’s level), and the department teaches educational components (subjects): “Foreign language”, “Foreign language for professional purposes”, “Foreign language, including professional purposes”.

At the basis of methodology of teaching a foreign language is the conscious and practical method. It is based on the following principles: 1) practical communicative orientation of learning based on students’ consciousness; 2) a functional approach to the selection and presentation of the language material, the study of vocabulary and morphology on a syntactic basis and the choice of a sentence as a  minimum unit of learning; 3) complex, concentric, situational and thematic principle of organization of language material; 4) rational consideration of students’ native language; 5) taking into account the aspect of country’s studies  in the learning process; 6) distinguishing  of several stages of teaching; 7) taking into account the specific goals and conditions of learning, as well as the psychological peculiarities  of students.

The department teaches extra courses that help foreign students improve their English language skills and master modern medical terminology and also prepare for the KROK-1 licensing exam:
“Foreign language” (English), “Foreign language for professional purposes” (English), “Foreign language (second)” (English)
The department has created 45 educational coursebooks, 12 instructional guidelines, etc.

Since 2020, lecturers  of the department have been working to create electronic courses based on the Moodle platform. In these courses, students can find all the information necessary for learning in the form of presentations, visual materials on grammatical and lexical topics, audio and video files, training and control online tests, links to additional Internet resources.

Scientific work

The department carries out research work on the topic “Social,  psychological and organizational aspects of quality management of higher medical education”, the results of which are implemented into the educational process.

Since 2006, the department has hold an annual scientific and practical conference with the international participation “Methodology and practice of linguistic training of foreign students”, on the basis of which a scientific edition is published. The conference was included into the register of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

The department has a student research group on the general topic “Language and crosscultural communication”. Every year foreign students take part in scientific student conferences and win prizes.

 

International Activity

The international activities of the department of language training of foreign citizens consist of the participation of the department lecturers in international conferences. They took part in such international conferences in 2020-2021:

  1. International scientific and practical conference “The world of science and innovation”, London, Great Britain.
  2. The 3rd International scientific and practical conference “ Results of modern scientific research and development” , Madrid, Spain.
  3. The 8th International scientific and practical conference «Science and education: problems, prospects and innovations», Kyoto, Japan.
  4. The 7th International scientific and practical conference “European Scientific Discussions”, Rome, Italy.
  5. International scientific and practical conference “Problems of Philological Sciences, Crosscultural Communication and Translation in Ukraine and EU”, Venice, Italy.
Student scientific society

The head of the student research group is Kozka Iryna Kyrylivna, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor.

Members of the group are the first-year students of the 5th, 6th and 7th faculties of foreign students.

The format – meetings are held once a month at  the department or online.

The general scientific topic of the group is “Language and crosscultural communication”. Students master the methods of linguistic and linguo-cultural analysis, learn to work with texts and the paremic fund of the language. The members of the group present the results of their research in the form of short and detailed reports at thematic meetings and conferences.

The members of the group traditionally take part in the annual university student conference “Medicine of the III millennium”.
