About us

The Department of Clinical Anatomy and Operative Surgery of Kharkiv National Medical University was founded in 1884. The main activities of the department include: educational, scientific and methodological.

The educational and pedagogical work of the department include training of domestic and foreign students of the 2nd year of medical faculties studying in the specialty “Medicine” and “Pediatrics” and students of the 2nd year of the dentistry faculty in the disciplines “Clinical anatomy and operative surgery” and “Clinical anatomy and operative surgery with special features children’s age”, as well as in the training of doctors-interns of surgical specialties.

The scientific activities of the department consist in the study of the clinical, surgical anatomy of a living person, individual anatomical variability of the structure of the human diaphragm, individual anatomical variability of the structure of the external ear of a person, graphic 3D modeling of human organs in relation to endovideosurgical interventions. Scientific and educational activities are closely related to methodological work – the preparation and publication of monographs, teaching aids, guidelines.

The department cooperates with the Institute of Multiphase Processes of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University, Germany; the State Institution “Institute of General and Emergency Surgery of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine”; the Military Medical Clinical Center of the Northern Region in Kharkiv; the Kharkiv Regional Clinical Hospital; the Kharkiv Regional Bureau of Forensic Medical Examination; SO «Grigoriev Institute for Medical Radiology and Oncology of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine»; the Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics. In 2019, an employee of the department underwent an internship in Poland. History of the department

The Department of Clinical Anatomy and Operative Surgery (Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy) at the School of Medicine of Kharkiv University was organized in 1884. Prior to that, for 80 years, teaching was carried out at the Departments of theoretical and clinical surgery.

During the existence of the Department, it was headed by outstanding scientists known for their works in various fields of operative surgery. The organizer of the department and its first head from 1884 to 1899 was Professor Oleksii Ivanovych Dudukalov. Later the department was headed by professors Delitsyn Serhii Mykolaiovych (from 1900 to 1903 years), Penskyi Yulian Romanovych (from 1905 to 1909 years), Przhevalskyi Bronislav Hryhorovych (from 1909 to 1915 years), Melnykov Oleksandr Vasylovych (from 1923 to 1931 years), Zinchenko-Hladkykh Valentyna Dmytrivna (from 1975 to 1990 years), Burykh Mykhailo Prokopovych (from 1990 to 2006 years), Tereshchenko Anatolii Oleksandrovych (from 2009 to 2011 years).

Since 2011 the Department is headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Volodymyr Hryhorovych Dudenko.

The scientific direction of the department since 1990 is the anatomy of some internal organs in the system of topographic coordinates for ultrasound, CT and MRI. The department offers a system of topographic coordinates of the human body, which is the methodological basis of topographic anatomy (Burykh M.P., 1990).

In recent years, since 2011, the field of scientific interests is surgical anatomy of a living person, individual anatomical variability of human structure, graphical 3D modeling of human organs in relation to endovideosurgical interventions.

In 2017, the Department of Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy was renamed into the Department of Clinical Anatomy and Operative Surgery.

Department today

The educational and pedagogical work of the department is to train 2nd year students of medical faculties studying in the specialty “Medicine” and “Pediatrics” and 2nd year students of the Dentistry faculty by the discipline “Clinical Anatomy and Operative Surgery” and “Clinical Anatomy and Operative Surgery with special features children’s age”, as well as training interns in surgical specialties.
The scientific activities of the department include graphic 3D modeling of human organs in relation to endovideosurgical interventions; the study of the surgical anatomy of a living person; individual anatomical variability of the structure of the human diaphragm; individual anatomical variability of the structure of the external ear of a person.
Every year, the staff of the department actively participate in scientific events of the All-Ukrainian and international levels.
The study rooms of the department are equipped with modern technical teaching aids. In the educational and methodological room there are a slide library, training videos on all topics of practical classes, multimedia projectors, computers; there are guidelines for practical classes on all topics of practical classes for 2nd year students of I, II, III, V, VI, VIII and dental faculties.
For students, a study guide has been developed for students-independent work in the discipline “Clinical Anatomy and Operative Surgery”, which contains QR codes with links to methodological recommendations and lecture materials for independent preparation outside classroom time.
All of the above creates favorable conditions for self-preparation of students during class time and outside classroom time.
A student scientific circle is constantly operating at the department, in the work of which students of the I-VI courses of KhNMU take part. The fruitfulness of his work is evidenced by numerous awards for reports at scientific forums of different levels (including those with international participation), joint scientific publications with teachers, victories in Olympiads, intellectual games (Brain-ring, BattleMed, etc.).

Educational process

Student’s training is carried out at the department in educational and professional programs “Medicine” Masters, “Dentistry” Masters, “Pediatrics” Masters; and educational disciplines are studied “Clinical Anatomy and Operative Surgery” and “Clinical Anatomy and Operative Surgery with special features children’s age”.
Modern teaching methods are widely used in the training of students at the department, namely visual, interactive, 3-D visualization, case and game technologies, technology of development of critical thinking, technology of integrated learning.
The department is developing programs and disciplines for teaching elective courses.
The department has created 2 textbooks, 1 study guide, 6 guidelines, 1 monograph and 8 innovations.
