The Department of Phthisiology and Pulmonology of the Kharkiv National Medical University was founded in 1923, on the basis of the Kharkiv Tuberculosis Clinical Institute. The department conducts educational, methodological, scientific, medical and advisory activities.
The main educational work of the department is to teach 4th year students of the discipline “Phthisiology”, as well as in the training of interns and tuberculosis students.
Methodical work consists in development of educational literature and methodical recommendations on questions of tuberculosis and actual problems of pulmonology, electronic courses.

In Kharkiv Medical Institute tuberculosis department was established in March 1923 at the Kharkiv Institute of clinical tuberculosis. Before the organization of the department there was a course of TB at the department of faculty therapy.
The first head of the department and director of the institute was Professor Faynshmidt I.I. (1923-1931). From 1931 to 1956 the department was headed by Professor B.M. Khmelnytskyi. Being director of TB institute and head of TB department of Medical institute B.M. Khmelnitsky conducted extensive work on research training. During this period doctoral dissertations of B.Z. Bunin, L.T. Malaya, E.B. Meve, E.L. Melnikova, A.E. Rabuhyna, Y.D. Shulga and PhD dissertations of V.I. Zhytna and Z.M. Orlova were created. At this time, developed the problem of mixed infection with tuberculosis, pulmonary tuberculosis and kolapsotherapy and surgical treatment of TB. From 1958 to 1970 head of the department was associate professor A.D. Korneev. Department staff carried out research on the pathogenesis of tuberculosis, treatment, criteria of its activity and small primary TB. From 1970 to 1996 the department was headed by Associate Professor S.M. Roslyk. The department carried out work in three main areas: epidemiology and organizational forms of TB control; study of the clinical features and differential diagnosis; and improving the efficiency of treatment. In 1998, the TB department was reorganized into the Department of phthisiology and pulmonology, headed by MD, Professor S.I. Zaitseva.
The department developed actual problems of modern phthisiology and pulmonology, namely the question of efficiency of treatment, ozone therapy, laser therapy, methods of application of modern hepatoprotectors, organ-saving treatments. There was performed the development of new methods of diagnosis and differential diagnosis, for which department received two patents. Department patented 4 inventions, published 30 guidelines for interns and students, published 76 papers, a textbook for students “Phthysiology” in Ukrainian and Russian (2004).
Since 2010, head of the department is MD, Professor O.S. Shevchenko.
The department trains students in the educational and professional programs “Medicine” and “Dentistry” and studies the educational component “Phthisiology”. The department also teaches elective courses “Phthisiology with evaluation of research results” for bachelors in “Technology of Medical Diagnosis and Treatment” and “Current issues of pulmonology” for masters in “Medicine”. In all disciplines, syllabuses and teaching materials are created and constantly updated, which are placed in the distance learning system of KhNMU.
In the training of students at the department is widely used problem-oriented learning, inverted classroom methodology, case method, clinical situations are considered, sets of radiographs, tomograms, and computed tomography are added to the tasks. In order to improve the assimilation of educational material by students and acquaintance with the world achievements in the fight against tuberculosis, the lecture material is constantly updated in accordance with the achievements of modern tuberculosis. Teachers of the department pay great attention to improving the educational and pedagogical work with English-speaking students. The department has created and placed on the Moodle platform “Distance Learning System of Kharkiv National Medical University” 16 distance courses that correspond to all disciplines taught at the department to Ukrainian, English and Russian students.
Practical training of students takes place on the clinical bases of Regional Phthisiopulmonology Center and Regional Tuberculosis Hospital № 3.
The department teaches elective courses “Phthisiology with evaluation of research results” for bachelors in “Technology of Medical Diagnosis and Treatment” and “Topical issues of pulmonology” for masters in “Medicine”.
The staff of the department has published a textbook “Palliative care for co-infection with tuberculosis/HIV” in Ukrainian and English, textbook “Phthisiology in diagrams, tables and figures” in Ukrainian and English, textbook “Phthisiology, textbook” in English manual “Syndromic diagnosis of lung diseases”, booklet of test tasks of the license exam “Step-2” in Ukrainian and English. The staff of the department took part in the preparation of educational materials for the publication of the national textbook “Phthisiology” in Ukrainian and English, the national textbook “Family Medicine” in Ukrainian and English.
Within the system of postgraduate education, the department trains TB interns, related interns, cadet doctors in the discipline “Phthisiology” and graduate students for the degree of “Doctor of Philosophy”.
The Department of Phthisiology and Pulmonology closely cooperates with higher educational institutions and research institutes – Bukovynian State Medical University, F.G. Yanovsky National Institute of Phthisiology and Pulmonology of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Institute of Spinal Pathology and Spinal Pathology. M.I. Sytenko, Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine”.
The department has concluded agreements on cooperation with institutions of practical health care Regional Phthisiopulmonology Center and Regional Tuberculosis Hospital №3.
In the framework of international research projects and programs, cooperation is carried out with the US National Institutes of Health (TB research and study project), which resulted in the Tuberculosis European Network Trials Group ACADEMY 2016 (TB-NET ACADEMY 2016), supported by Germany Ministry of Health, countries: Germany, France, the USA, Ukraine, Italy, Spain, Sweden, UK and others (29.05.2016-1.06.2016).
The department takes an active part in international scientific and educational programs, conferences, congresses and congresses in Ukraine and abroad:
- In 2015, the staff of the department underwent an internship in Moldova.
- In 2015, 2018, 2019, employees of the department underwent internships in Germany.
- In 2017, 2021, employees of the department underwent internships in Poland.
- In 2017, the staff of the department underwent an internship in Spain.
Published scientific materials contain research performed at the current level of development of tuberculosis and correspond to modern achievements in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis.
Therapeutic work is carried out on the basis of KNP CHOR Regional Phthisiology and Pulmonology Center and the State Health Institution; Regional TB Hospital №3. The staff of the department provides highly qualified medical care to patients in the departments of these hospitals. The head of the department, Professor Shevchenko O.S. is a member of the Central Medical Advisory Commission (CLCC), regularly participates in its work.
Professors, associate professors and assistants of the department regularly speak at the “Tuberculosis Days” and meetings of the Kharkiv branch of the Ukrainian Association of Tuberculosis.
The staff of the department promotes professional development of medical staff through joint clinical, scientific and practical conferences, seminars, consultations with the latest advances in medical science and health practice, provides organizational and methodological assistance in planning and implementing new methods of treatment and diagnosis tuberculosis and lung diseases, participates in the analysis of their effectiveness.
According to the results of research, clinical recommendations for providing medical care to the population is created. The implementation of research results is confirmed by relevant acts, patents and guidelines.
Tuberculosis is a global problem, and therefore cooperation with international partners is a priority for the Department of Tuberculosis and Pulmonology. Research and teaching staff of the department are members of European and international professional societies (European Respiratory Society – ERS, International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases, European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases – ESCMID, etc.), which is confirmed by many years of success in grant programs. active participation in scientific events, publications.
Under the leadership of prof. Butov D. O. is conducting international scientific and practical cooperation with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in the framework of the project: “Creation of a tuberculosis portal of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Ukraine”.
Teachers of the department take an active part in the activities of the Ukrainian-Swiss project “Development of Medical Education”.

Members are students of 4-6 courses of all faculties. The composition is updated annually.
Meetings of the scientific circle of the Department of Phthisiology and Pulmonology are held once a month. The meeting consists of theoretical, practical and scientific parts of the work where current issues of tuberculosis are covered. The theoretical part consists of a discussion of this problem in tuberculosis, then students analyze the case histories of thematic patients, followed by the supervision of the patient in the department. Then teachers can discuss in detail the scientific justification of a topic, followed by scientific work and writing its results in the form of a publication.
Every year in March, the Department of Phthisiology and Pulmonology holds a departmental conference of young scientists and students, dedicated to the Day of Tuberculosis. Where young scientists and students can cover their research results.
Traditionally, in conjunction with the student government, a charity event – “White Chamomile Day” is held for the TB Day.
